Data-oriented Belief Revision: Towards a Unified Theory of Epistemic Processing

چکیده

Building on a long research tradition (cf. 1), this paper proposes to apply the distinction between data (information stored in the agent’s mind) and beliefs (information accepted as reliable) to belief revision modeling (cf. 2), in order to integrate belief change in the overall epistemic processing of the agent. As a result, a more comprehensive and complex model of epistemic dynamics is formally described, christened as Data-oriented Belief Revision (DBR), and compared on the ground of expressive power with the underlying conceptual architecture of standard models of belief change (cf. 3). Some computational features of DBR are further discussed in 4, with special reference to information update, data structures, the assessment of data properties, and belief selection. Finally, preliminary results and future developments of DBR are assessed in 5.

Argumentation and Data-oriented Belief Revision: On the Two-Sided Nature of Epistemic Change

This paper aims to bring together two separate threads in the formal study of epistemic change: belief revision and argumentation theories. Belief revision describes the way in which an agent is supposed to change his own mind, while argumentation deals with persuasive strategies employed to change the mind of other agents. Belief change and argumentation are two sides (cognitive and social) of...

Revising Beliefs Through Arguments: Bridging the Gap Between Argumentation and Belief Revision in MAS

This paper compares within the MAS framework two separate threads in the formal study of epistemic change: belief revision and argumentation theories. Belief revision describes how an agent is supposed to change his own mind, while argumentation deals with persuasive strategies employed to change the mind of other agents. These are two sides (cognitive and social) of the same epistemic coin: ar...

Strong Belief and Forward Induction Reasoning

We provide a unified epistemic analysis of some forward-induction solution concepts in games with complete and incomplete information. We suggest that forward induction reasoning may be usefully interpreted as a set of assumptions governing the players’ belief revision processes, and define a notion of strong belief to formalize these assumptions. Building on the notion of strong belief, we pro...

Private announcement and belief expansion: an internal perspective

AGM belief revision theory and the BMS framework of dynamic epistemic logic both deal with the formalization of belief change, the former in a single agent setting and the latter in a multiagent setting. In this paper we study the relation between these two formalisms. To be fair, we restrict our attention to the AGM operation of expansion since the original BMS framework does not allow for bel...

Epistemic Networks for Epistemic Commitments

The ways in which people seek and process information are fundamentally epistemic in nature. Existing epistemic cognition research has tended towards characterizing this fundamental relationship as cognitive or belief-based in nature. This paper builds on recent calls for a shift towards activity-oriented perspectives on epistemic cognition and proposes a new theory of ‘epistemic commitments’. ...
